José Pedro Balmaceda Pascal (often pronounced [xo?se ?peð?o ?alma?seða pas?kal] in Spanish; born April 2, 1975) is a well-known actor with dual Chilean-American citizenship. After spending almost two decades in small roles in both theater and TV, Pascal achieved his breakout role as Oberyn Martell in the season four of the HBO fantasy series Game of Thrones (released in 2014). He further rose to fame by playing his role as Javier Peña in the Netflix crime drama *Narcos* (2015–2017). Pascal subsequently appeared in the motion pictures *The Great Wall* (2016), *Kingsman: The Golden Circle* (released in 2017), *The Equalizer 2* (in 2018), and *Triple Frontier* (2019).
His lead roles as the character Din Djarin in the Disney+ sci-fi show *The Mandalorian* (2019–present) and Joel Miller in the HBO post-apocalyptic drama series The Last of Us (starting in 2023) led to his global fame, earning him a reputation for portraying fatherly figures. In *The Last of Us*, he won several accolades, including a Screen Actors Guild Award and a Golden Globe nomination. He took further parental roles in the movies such as *We Can Be Heroes* (from 2020), *Strange Way of Life* (released in 2023), and playing Fink the fox in *The Wild Robot* (in 2024). Pascal also appeared in major films such as *Wonder Woman 1984* (2020) and *Gladiator II* (coming in 2024).
Having started in theater in 1999, he made his Broadway debut as Edmund in a 2019 Broadway rendition of *King Lear*. Time magazine named him one of the most influential people of 2023 by Time magazine in 2023.
